Architecture overviews: an example

Architecture overview of a food retailer's target architecture: channels, applications, integration and data as four layers from left to right, on a platform band of cloud landing zone, identity, network and productivity services.
  • Layer by layer

Channels, applications, integration and data, read left to right.

  • Readable at a glance

One page a director can follow, with the detail for architects behind it.

  • Linked to the detail

Each system links to its own solution or high-level design.

The basics

What is an architecture overview?

An architecture overview, sometimes called a big-picture diagram, shows the main parts of a system or an organisation's IT on one page: how users reach it, the applications, how they exchange data, where data is analysed and the platform underneath. It leaves the wiring out on purpose.

Overviews open design proposals, steering meetings and onboarding packs, because they are the one diagram every audience can read. They work when each box has an owner and a link to the detail, and fail when the detail is crammed onto the page.

In Blueprintr each layer and system opens a stratum with its owner, role and plans, and can link to the solution and high-level designs, so the overview stays simple and the detail stays one click away.

Why Blueprintr

Overviews every audience can read

Simple on the page, complete one click down.

  • Layers as containers

Draw each layer as a coloured container and place the systems inside, with Azure, AWS, Microsoft and Lucide icons or your own SVGs.

    Vellum
  • Owner and role behind each box

Give every layer and system a stratum with its owner, what it does, where it runs and what changes next.

    Stratum
  • An index of the programme

Link each system's record to its solution design or high-level design, so the overview becomes the front page of the work.

  • Current and future, side by side

Keep the current and target overviews as diagram tabs in one blueprint, so readers switch between them without losing their place.

  • Present it to the board

On Premium, walk the board through the layers with Podium, one framed part of the live diagram per slide.

  • Embedded where people look

Embed the published overview in your wiki or intranet; the embed follows the latest published version unless you pin one.

  2. Draw the layers

Add a container for each layer: channels, applications, integration, data and the platform.

  3. Place the systems

Put each system in its layer, and add one arrow between layers rather than one per interface.

  4. Add owners and links

Right-click each system and add a stratum with its owner and role, linked to its detailed design.

  5. Share it

Publish the overview and send the link, or embed it at the top of the programme's pages.

FAQ

Questions about architecture overviews

Is this architecture overview tool free?

Yes. The Vellum editor, the icon packs and strata are on the free Personal plan, in the browser and in the desktop app. Podium presentations need Premium.

What should an architecture overview diagram include?

How users reach the business, the main applications and their owners, how they exchange data, where data is analysed, the platform underneath, and what is being retired. Leave interfaces and network detail to the designs.

What is the difference between an architecture overview and a high-level design?

An overview shows the layers and main systems with very few lines. A high-level design shows the components and connections of one system or estate in enough detail to start a low-level design.

How many boxes should an architecture overview have?

Few enough to read in a minute; 15 to 25 is common. If you need more, group them into layers or move the detail into the systems' strata and linked designs.

Can I show the current and target architecture?

Yes. Keep each as a diagram tab in the same blueprint, or draw them side by side with the gap between them, as a current and future state diagram does.

Can I embed the overview in Confluence or SharePoint?

Published public or unlisted blueprints embed with an iframe wherever your wiki allows one. On Enterprise, private blueprints embed in Confluence and SharePoint, with each viewer signing in through your SSO.
