Kubernetes diagrams: an example

The Kubernetes icon set
Pods, Deployments, Services, Ingress, Secrets and nodes, with AWS and Azure icons for what sits around them.
Namespaces as containers
Clusters, namespaces and node pools nest inside each other, and move together.
The manifest behind the shape
YAML, requests, probes and scaling targets open from the object they describe.
The basics
What is a Kubernetes diagram?
A Kubernetes diagram, or Kubernetes architecture diagram, shows how an application runs on a cluster: the namespaces, the workloads such as Deployments and StatefulSets, the Services and Ingress that route traffic to their pods, the ConfigMaps and Secrets they read, the node pools underneath and the managed services outside the cluster.
Platform teams use them to onboard engineers, review a design, plan an upgrade and work an incident. The picture shows how the parts fit together; the questions that follow, such as the replica limits or which policy blocks a port, need the settings behind each object.
In Blueprintr every object on the diagram can open a stratum with its manifest and notes, so the diagram, the YAML and the reasoning are kept in one document.
Why Blueprintr
Kubernetes diagrams your platform team can run on
Draw the cluster the way the Kubernetes docs do, then keep the settings behind it.
Kubernetes, AWS and Azure icons
Vellum includes 72 Kubernetes resource icons, labelled or plain, beside the AWS and Azure sets for the services around the cluster. Add your own SVGs for tools such as Argo CD.
VellumClusters, namespaces, node pools
Draw each level as a container. Containers nest without limit and own what is inside them, so moving a namespace moves its workloads too.
Manifests behind each object
Keep the YAML in a stratum's Raw tab, with line numbers and highlighting, and the requests, probes, limits and owner in a Rich tab beside it.
StratumClusters from a cloud scan
On the Team plan, Continuum Cloud reads AWS and Azure with read-only access and draws EKS and AKS clusters with their node groups. You draw the workloads inside.
ContinuumSequence diagrams beside it
Add a Mermaid tab to the same blueprint for a rollout or a request path, so the topology and the timing are explained together.
Draft it with AI
Describe the cluster and AI Draw lays it out with icons from your installed packs, ready to edit. The free plan includes five generations a month.

How to
How to make a Kubernetes diagram in Blueprintr
Create a blueprint
Sign up free, create a blueprint and open the Vellum editor.
Draw the cluster
Add a container for the cluster, then one for each namespace and node pool, named as they are in kubectl.
Add the workloads
Drop in Deployments, Services, Ingress, ConfigMaps and Secrets from the Kubernetes icons and connect the traffic path.
Attach the manifests
Right-click an object and add a stratum with its YAML, limits, probes and owning team.
Publish and share
Publish the blueprint and link it from your platform handbook or the team's README.
Start from a template
Kubernetes platform architecture
A managed cluster with its platform add-ons, autoscaled node pools, a namespace per team, and the identity, data and secrets services around it, with strata for each part.
FAQ
Questions about kubernetes diagrams
Is this Kubernetes diagram tool free?
Yes. The Vellum editor, the Kubernetes, AWS and Azure icon sets and strata are on the free Personal plan, in the browser and in the desktop app.
Which Kubernetes icons are included?
The Kubernetes icon set: 72 icons for resources such as pods, Deployments, StatefulSets, DaemonSets, Services, Ingress, Jobs, ConfigMaps, Secrets, volumes, namespaces, nodes and control plane parts. Logos for tools such as Argo CD or Prometheus are not included; add them as your own SVGs.
Can Blueprintr draw my cluster automatically?
Partly. On the Team plan, Continuum Cloud draws EKS and AKS clusters with their node groups from a read-only scan of AWS or Azure. It does not read the objects inside a cluster, such as pods or Deployments, so you draw those.
How do I show namespaces in a Kubernetes architecture diagram?
Draw each namespace as a container inside the cluster's container and put its objects in it. Colour the namespaces by team or environment so readers can tell them apart at a glance.
Can I keep YAML manifests with the diagram?
Yes. A stratum's Raw tab holds code or config with line numbers and syntax highlighting, so a Deployment's manifest can open from the Deployment on the diagram.
Can I share the diagram with people outside the platform team?
Yes. Publish the blueprint as public, unlisted or private. Unlisted links open without an account, and a private blueprint is visible only to the people you share it with.
