Process maps: an example

A lane for every party
Each lane is one team, so hand-offs show where the work changes hands.
Decisions marked
Diamonds with labelled paths show every way a case can go.
Owners and timings
Each task opens its owner, its rule and how long it should take.
The basics
What is a process map?
A process map is a diagram of how work moves through a business process: the steps in order, who does each one, the decisions that change the path, and where the process starts and ends. Swimlane maps give each team or role its own lane, so hand-offs between them stand out.
Teams map processes to train staff, find delays and duplicated work, agree changes and show an auditor how something is done. The map shows the flow; the detail behind each step, such as its rules, systems and timings, decides whether the process works.
In Blueprintr each step on the map opens a stratum with its owner, rule and target time, and Vellum includes BPMN 2.0 and flowchart shapes for teams that model formally.
Why Blueprintr
Process maps your teams can work from
The flow on the canvas, the rules behind every step.
Swimlanes and notation
Draw lanes as containers, with BPMN 2.0 events, tasks and gateways or classic flowchart symbols, and labelled paths out of every decision.
VellumThe rule behind each step
Give every task a stratum with its owner, the rule it applies, the systems it uses and how long it should take.
StratumSub-processes one level down
Put a sub-process in a step's stratum as its own diagram, so the main map stays readable and the detail is still there.
Flowcharts as text
Write quick flowcharts in Mermaid, in a Mermaid tab or a code block, beside the swimlane map in the same blueprint.
A swimlane template
Start from the Compendium's customer onboarding swimlane, with lanes, steps aligned in time and a checklist behind each step.
Walk teams through a change
On Premium, present the current and new process with Podium, one framed part of the live map per slide.

Create a blueprint
Sign up free and create a blueprint, or start from the customer onboarding swimlane in the Compendium.
Add a lane per team
Add a container for each team or role involved, stacked so the steps line up.
Place the steps
Add a start event, each task in order and an end event for each way the process can finish.
Mark the decisions
Add a diamond wherever the path splits, and label each path out of it.
Add owners and timings
Right-click each task and add a stratum with its owner, rule and target time.

Customer onboarding (swimlane)
A cross-team process in five lanes with steps aligned in time and hand-offs marked, plus a RACI, KPIs and a stratum per step with its owner and SLA.
FAQ
Questions about process maps
Is this process mapping software free?
Yes. The Vellum editor with its BPMN, flowchart and swimlane shapes, Mermaid and strata are on the free Personal plan, in the browser and in the desktop app.
What is a swimlane diagram?
A process map divided into lanes, one per team or role, with each step placed in the lane of whoever does it. Lines that cross lanes show hand-offs, which is where most delays happen.
Does Blueprintr support BPMN?
Vellum includes BPMN 2.0 shapes for events, tasks, gateways, pools, lanes and data. It does not import or export BPMN XML, and it does not run or simulate processes.
What is the difference between a process map and a flowchart?
A flowchart shows any sequence of steps and decisions. A process map is a flowchart of a business process that also shows who does each step, usually in swimlanes, and how long each should take.
Can I draw a process map from text?
Yes, as a Mermaid flowchart in a Mermaid tab or a code block. AI Draw can also lay out a first draft from a description, within the free plan's five generations a month.
How detailed should a process map be?
Detailed enough that each box is one task a person does. Put the rules and screens behind each box in its stratum, and a sub-process in its own diagram one level down.
