Rack diagrams: an example

Rack diagram of two 24U racks in an office comms room: patch panels, access and core switches, WAN routers, hypervisors, a backup NAS and two UPS units, with the circuits and power feeds beside them.
  • Every U accounted for

Racks from 1U to 100U with numbered units, so free space on the page is free space in the rack.

  • Detail behind each device

Serials, power draw, uplinks and support contracts open from the unit instead of a separate spreadsheet.

  • One link to the current rack

Publish once and share a single link that always shows the latest published layout.

The basics

What is a rack diagram?

A rack diagram, also called a rack elevation, is a front view of an equipment rack drawn in rack units (U). Each device sits at the height it occupies, from the patch panels at the top to the UPS at the bottom, so anyone can see what is installed, where it is and how much room is left.

Engineers use rack diagrams to plan an install, to brief remote hands at a colocation site, to check power before adding a device and to hand a comms room over to another team. Each of those jobs needs more than the picture: the serial number for the support call, the uplink before re-patching, the feed before unplugging anything.

In Blueprintr a rack is a native shape in the Vellum editor, and every unit in it is its own shape. That makes the drawing an index: click a device and its record opens beside the rack.

Why Blueprintr

Rack diagrams that stay useful after the install

Draw the rack in minutes, then keep the record behind it in the same place.

  • Native rack shapes

Start from a 12U, 24U, 42U or 48U rack, or set any height up to 100U, numbered from the bottom or the top. Each unit takes a server, switch, patch panel, UPS or blanking panel, or any icon from the installed packs.

    Vellum
  • A record behind every unit

Each U is its own shape, so each one can have a stratum: serial number, asset tag, power draw, warranty date, uplinks and the procedure for that device.

    Stratum
  • Move hardware without redrawing

Drag a unit onto another to swap them, within one rack or between two. The device keeps its label, its connections and the detail behind it.

  • Cabling you can follow

Draw a line from a switch to a patch panel or to the next rack. Lines attach to the unit itself, so they follow it when the rack is rearranged.

  • One page for everyone

Publish the rack as a blueprint and share the link, or embed it in your wiki. Readers can pan, zoom and open any unit without an account.

    Blueprints
  • A snapshot of every change

Each publish keeps a snapshot of the rack and its records. On the Team plan you can browse earlier versions and restore one.

How to

How to make a rack diagram in Blueprintr

  1. Create a blueprint

Sign up free, create a blueprint and open the diagram editor. The blueprint keeps the drawing, the detail and any files together.

  2. Add a rack

Open the shapes library, choose Racks and drop one onto the canvas. Set its height in U and name it after its place in the room.

  3. Fill each unit

Select a unit and pick its equipment, or drop an icon onto it. Use the device names your labels and monitoring already use.

  4. Attach the detail

Right-click a unit and add a stratum for its serial number, power draw, uplinks and support contact.

  5. Publish and share

Publish the blueprint, then send the link or embed it where your team already looks.

FAQ

Questions about rack diagrams

Is this rack diagram software free?

Yes. Rack shapes are part of the Vellum editor on the free Personal plan, in the browser and in the desktop app. You can also open Vellum without an account to try them before signing up.

What rack sizes can I draw?

Presets cover 12U, 24U, 42U and 48U racks, and a rack can be any height from 1U to 100U. Units are numbered from U1 at the bottom by default, or from the top if your site counts that way.

Can one device take up more than one U?

Not as a single shape yet. Each unit holds one item, so a 2U server is drawn as two labelled units, as the UPS and its battery pack are in the example above.

Can I connect devices in different racks?

Yes. Every unit has its own connection points, so a line can run from a switch in one rack to a patch panel in another, and it stays attached when either unit moves.

Where do serial numbers and asset details go?

In a stratum on the unit. A stratum can contain tables, notes, code, images and files, and it opens when a reader clicks the device, so the drawing itself stays uncluttered.

Can I share a rack diagram with a colocation provider?

Yes. Publish it as unlisted and send the link; anyone with the link can open it without an account. On Premium you can add a password as well.

Can I export a rack diagram?

Yes. Vellum exports PNG, SVG, PDF, JPG and WebP, and the PNG and SVG files open again in Vellum for editing.
