Data centre diagrams: an example

The floor plan at a glance
Rows, aisles and racks coloured by role, with reserved space left visible for planning.
Every rack one click deep
Contents, power draw and support contracts open from the rack, with its elevation beside them.
Power and circuits on record
Feeds, breaker ratings and cross-connect references sit behind the shapes that use them.
The basics
What is a data centre diagram?
A data centre diagram shows a computer room or colocation space as it is built: the floor plan of racks and aisles, the power feeds from each UPS, the cooling, and the circuits that enter through the meet-me room. Rack elevations and network diagrams of the same site sit one level below it.
Teams use data centre diagrams to plan capacity, brief remote hands, check power before an install and prove to an auditor what runs where. The floor plan answers where; the next questions, such as what is in that rack or which feed it is on, need the record behind each rack.
In Blueprintr each rack on the plan can open a stratum with its contents, power figures and contracts, and a sub-diagram of its elevation, so the floor plan and the detail are one document.
Why Blueprintr
Data centre diagrams that keep the detail
Draw the room from above, then put the record behind each rack.
Floor plans from simple shapes
Draw halls and cages as containers and racks and aisles as rectangles. Colour racks by role and dash the reserved ones, so capacity reads at a glance.
VellumRack elevations one click deep
Give each rack a stratum with a sub-diagram of its elevation, drawn with native rack shapes. The floor plan opens into each rack, and each unit in it can have its own record.
StratumPower you can check
Keep feeds, breaker ratings and measured draw in a table behind each rack, beside the rule your team follows, such as staying under 80% of one feed.
Every circuit into the room
Draw the meet-me room and each carrier and cloud circuit, with the provider's cross-connect references behind them for the next ticket.
Network discovery on Enterprise
Continuum Local sweeps the ranges you allow over SNMP from an agent inside your network and draws the routers, switches and firewalls it finds, with their links.
ContinuumOne link for remote hands
Publish the blueprint and send the colocation provider an unlisted link to the current layout. Readers open racks and records without an account.
Blueprints
How to
How to make a data centre diagram in Blueprintr
Create a blueprint
Sign up free and create a blueprint for the site, then open the Vellum editor.
Draw the room
Add a container for the hall or cage, then rectangles for each rack and aisle, named as they are on the floor.
Add power and circuits
Draw the UPS feeds and the circuits from the meet-me room, labelled with their references.
Fill in each rack
Right-click a rack and add a stratum with its contents, power draw and contracts, and a sub-diagram of its elevation.
Publish and share
Publish the blueprint and share the link with your team and the provider's remote hands.
Start from a template
Data centre spine-leaf fabric
Two spines, four leaves and a border-leaf pair with VXLAN EVPN over an eBGP underlay, and strata for the IP, ASN and VNI plans and maintenance runbooks.
FAQ
Questions about data centre diagrams
Is this data centre diagram software free?
Yes. The Vellum editor, its rack shapes and strata are on the free Personal plan, in the browser and in the desktop app. Network discovery with Continuum Local is part of Enterprise.
Can I draw the floor plan and the rack elevations together?
Yes. Draw the floor plan on the main canvas and give each rack a stratum with a sub-diagram of its elevation, or keep the elevations on a second diagram tab in the same blueprint.
What should a data centre diagram include?
At least the racks in their rows, the aisles, the power feeds and the circuits into the space, with names that match your labels. Behind each rack, record its contents, power draw, contracts and owner.
Can Blueprintr discover what is in my data centre?
On Enterprise, Continuum Local sweeps the address ranges you allow over SNMP and draws the network devices it finds, with LLDP and CDP links and a record per device. It draws the network, not the floor layout.
Can I share the diagram with my colocation provider?
Yes. Publish it as unlisted and send the link; anyone with it can open the diagram without an account. On Premium you can add a password as well.
Can I import a Visio data centre diagram?
Not yet. Blueprintr imports draw.io files (.drawio and .xml) on every plan, but Visio files are not supported. Most teams redraw the floor plan, which takes minutes with containers and rectangles.
