Site surveys: an example

IT site survey floor plan of a new veterinary clinic: rooms with proposed access points and data points, a comms cupboard with a 12U cabinet, measured cable runs and issues to fix marked in red.
  • The plan, room by room

Rooms laid out as built, each holding what the survey proposes for it.

  • Access points and cable runs

Proposed positions with measured run lengths, ready for the installer.

  • Photos and notes per room

Measurements, photos and issues open from the room they describe.

The basics

What is an IT site survey?

An IT site survey records the physical facts a project depends on before anything is installed: the rooms and their uses, where the comms cabinet can go, power and ventilation, cable routes and lengths, Wi-Fi coverage and anything that blocks it, and the issues a builder or client must fix first.

MSPs run site surveys before fit-outs, office moves, Wi-Fi upgrades and new sites. A survey only helps if the installer, the builder and the client can each find the answer they need, which is hard in a spreadsheet of notes beside a folder of photos.

In Blueprintr the survey is a floor plan, and every room opens a stratum with its measurements, photos and issues, so the plan and the notes are one document everyone on the project can use.

Why Blueprintr

Site surveys installers can work from

The floor plan on one canvas, the surveyor's notes behind every room.

  • Floor plans from containers

Draw each room as a container where it sits in the building, and put the access points, data points and cabinet inside the room they belong to.

    Vellum
  • Notes and photos behind rooms

Give each room a stratum with its measurements and issues, and an image tab for the photos taken on the day.

    Stratum
  • Issues where they are

Mark each issue as a red tile in the room it affects, with a stratum saying who fixes it and by when.

  • The cabinet, unit by unit

Plan the comms cabinet with Vellum's native rack shapes, as a sub-diagram behind the comms room, so every U is agreed before install.

  • Draw over the architect's plan

Place the building plan as an image on the canvas and draw rooms and equipment on top, so positions match the drawings.

  • One link for the builder

Send the builder and the client an unlisted link. They can open every room's notes without an account.

FAQ

Questions about site surveys

Is this site survey software free?

Yes. The Vellum editor, rack shapes, strata and image tabs are on the free Personal plan, in the browser and in the desktop app.

What should an IT site survey include?

Every room and its use, the cabinet location and its power, data points per room, access point positions with test readings, cable routes and lengths, issues to fix with an owner, and photo references.

Can I add photos to a site survey?

Yes. A stratum can have image tabs, uploaded or linked, and its rich text can include images, so each room's photos open from the room on the plan.

Does Blueprintr create Wi-Fi heatmaps?

No. Blueprintr records the survey; it does not measure coverage. Take readings with your survey tool and record them in the room's stratum, as the example does for each access point.

Can I use the architect's floor plan?

Yes, as an image. Place it on the canvas and draw rooms, access points and cable runs over it, so positions match the drawings.

Can the builder see the survey without an account?

Yes. Publish the blueprint as unlisted and send the link; anyone with it can open the plan and every room's notes. On Premium you can add a password.
