Blueprintr vs IcePanel
IcePanel models a system once and renders C4 diagrams as views of it. Blueprintr draws each diagram on a canvas and puts the detail behind the shapes. The choice is between a governed model and a document readers open on the diagram.

The short version
Choose Blueprintr if
You want each diagram to take the shape its subject needs, the runbook and the owner one click behind the box, and a scan of AWS or Azure you re-run when the estate changes.
Choose IcePanel if
Your team has adopted C4 and wants one model with governed views, future-state drafts and decision records, and is happy to model rather than draw.
Use both when
IcePanel holds the reference model for architects. The operational documentation engineers read on call is a Blueprintr page embedded in the wiki.
How IcePanel works
IcePanel keeps one model of your landscape: systems, containers, components and the connections between them. Diagrams are views onto that model, so a rename shows up everywhere. Flows animate a sequence across a diagram, drafts hold a future state until they are merged, versions snapshot the landscape, and decision records attach to the objects they concern.
Blueprintr is diagram-first documentation. You draw the system in Vellum, write the detail into the shapes as strata, and publish one live URL. On Team, Continuum Cloud draws AWS and Azure from a read-only scan, and on AWS it also shows Terraform drift on the canvas. On Enterprise, Continuum Link attaches timestamped snapshots from monitoring and ITSM tools to the shapes, and Continuum Local sweeps your on-premise network from inside it so Blueprintr can draw it.

| Documentation behind every shapeCan a shape hold real content: markdown, tables, code, files? | Partly: Objects, connections and diagrams carry a markdown description and links. Decision records attach on Growth and up. Tables, files and tabs are not documented. | Yes: A stratum on any shape: markdown, tables, code, files, links, tabs, even another diagram.Free |
| Hand-drawn diagrams with vendor iconsCan you draw freely, with real AWS, Azure, GCP and Kubernetes icons? | No: Diagrams are C4 views of the model rather than a freeform canvas. No vendor icon packs are documented. | Yes: Vellum, with vendor icon packs and your own SVGs. draw.io and Excalidraw are engines too.Free |
| Diagrams from textCan a diagram be written as code and kept in version control? | Partly: Model-as-code import from JSON or YAML, and an API. The model rather than the drawing is the code. | Partly: Mermaid tabs render from text and sit beside drawn tabs. Vellum diagrams are drawn, not coded.Free |

| Draw AWS or Azure from a live accountWill it diagram what is actually running, read-only? | No: No AWS, Azure or GCP account scanning is documented. | Yes: Continuum Cloud takes a read-only role or a Reader app registration and scans the accounts or subscriptions and regions you choose, narrowed to a VPC, subnet or resource group.Team and up |
| Terraform drift on the diagramDoes it compare what you declared with what is running? | No: No Terraform support. Code-repo linking notifies when a linked file moves or is deleted. | Yes: Point an AWS connection at your Terraform remote state. Drift from the declared infrastructure shows on the diagram.Team and up |
| Operational data on shapesCan a shape show the on-call, the open incidents or the uptime from the tools that report them? | No: Not offered. | Yes: Continuum Link attaches 39 connectors (PagerDuty, Datadog, ServiceNow, CloudWatch and more) as tabs on a stratum, each a timestamped snapshot an editor refreshes. On-premise systems such as SolarWinds, Zabbix and NetBox answer through Continuum Local, an agent inside your network that also sweeps it for Blueprintr to draw.Enterprise |
| Version history and diffsCan you see what changed since the last review, and restore? | Partly: Versions are snapshots with a note; three on the free plan, revert on Growth. Where Blueprintr differs
Draw it the way the subject needs
A C4 model rewards teams who keep it and punishes diagrams that do not fit it. Vellum is a canvas: a network fabric, a data flow and a release pipeline each get the shape that explains them, with vendor icons rather than boxes.
Depth behind the shape
IcePanel objects carry a description with markdown and links. A Blueprintr stratum carries markdown, tables, code, files and tabs, and can hold a second diagram. The detail readers need on call lives on the shape they clicked.
Connected to what is running
Continuum Cloud scans AWS and Azure read-only and draws the result. Terraform state on an AWS connection shows drift on the canvas. IcePanel has no cloud or IaC import; the model is maintained by hand or by code.
A free plan without an object cap
IcePanel's free plan stops at 100 model objects and three versions. Blueprintr's free plan holds unlimited blueprints and strata.
Where IcePanel is the better choice
Teams committed to the C4 model who want one governed model, future-state drafts merged like branches, and decision records attached to the objects they concern.
- One model, many views: a change to an object updates every diagram that shows it.
- Drafts and versions for future-state design, with merges that list the changes.
- Decision records attached to objects, connections and diagrams.
- Model-as-code import from JSON or YAML, an API with SDKs, webhooks and an MCP server on paid plans.
- Exports to Markdown, HTML, llms.txt and the Structurizr format.

Moving work from IcePanel
Export each IcePanel diagram as SVG or PNG and the model as Markdown or HTML. The Markdown descriptions paste into strata one object at a time, and the decision records into a folium on Team. Diagrams are redrawn in Vellum, where a context diagram, a container diagram and the deployment view become tabs of one blueprint and a container's shape opens onto the diagram of its components.
Frequently asked
Does Blueprintr support the C4 model?
There is no C4 mode. You can draw context, container and component diagrams as tabs of one blueprint, and a stratum on a container can hold the component diagram, which gives you the zoom without the model.
Does IcePanel do anything Blueprintr cannot?
One model behind every view. Rename a system in IcePanel and every diagram updates. In Blueprintr each diagram is its own drawing, so a rename is repeated on each canvas.
Which connects to the running estate?
Blueprintr. Continuum Cloud scans AWS and Azure on Team. On Enterprise, Continuum Local sweeps and draws your on-premise network, and Continuum Link attaches snapshots from monitoring, ITSM and on-premise systems. IcePanel's model is maintained by hand, by code or by an agent.
Can an agent work with both?
Yes. IcePanel's MCP server is on paid plans. Blueprintr's personal MCP server and REST API use scoped keys and are documented for Claude Code, Codex and Cursor.
