8 draw.io alternatives for architecture documentation
draw.io is free, capable and everywhere. If you are looking beyond it, the reason is usually what happens after the drawing: where the documentation goes, how the picture is shared, and what keeps it current.

What to look for when leaving draw.io
Whether the diagram is the document
A general editor produces a picture you then paste into a wiki. Look for a tool where the detail is behind the shapes and the picture never leaves.
Sharing without exporting
A PNG rots the day it is pasted. A live URL or embed shows every reader the current version.
Technical icons and imports
Check for real vendor icon packs, and for an import path from the files you already have.
The shortlist
Blueprintr
Diagram-first documentationA blueprint is a document that opens on a diagram. Every shape carries its own detail, and the blueprint publishes to one live URL. On Team, Continuum Cloud draws AWS and Azure from a read-only role. On Enterprise, Continuum Link attaches dated snapshots from monitoring and ITSM tools, and Continuum Local sweeps your on-premise network from inside it so Blueprintr can draw it.
- The document around the drawing. draw.io attaches key-value metadata and tooltips to a shape. A Blueprintr stratum holds markdown, tables, code, files, links and tabs. draw.io diagrams inside Blueprintr get strata on their shapes too.
- One live page instead of a file. A draw.io file lives in a drive or a wiki page. A blueprint is a published page with tabs, a contents tree and a sidebar, embeddable in Confluence, SharePoint or a README, and it shows the current version to every reader.
- A scan that draws for you. Continuum Cloud draws AWS and Azure from a read-only scan on Team, and shows Terraform drift for AWS. draw.io draws what you draw.
- History that belongs to the document. draw.io's history is whatever the storage provides. Every blueprint publish is a snapshot, with diffs and restore on Team.

Moving work from draw.io
Nothing to convert. Upload the .drawio files through the import wizard, or create a diagram tab with the draw.io engine and open them there. The shapes are pickable, so strata bind to them the day they arrive. Redraw the ones you want in Vellum when you want live collaboration, Continuum or Podium, which work on Vellum tabs only.
Frequently asked
Why look beyond draw.io?
Usually because the diagram needs documentation behind it, a live URL rather than a file, version history that belongs to the diagram, or a cloud scan to draw from.
Which alternative is closest to draw.io?
Excalidraw for a free open-source editor with a lighter style. Blueprintr keeps draw.io itself as an engine and adds the document around it.
Do I lose my draw.io files?
No. Blueprintr opens them as editable draw.io tabs, and Lucidchart and Miro import the XML or a VSDX export.
