8 Lucidchart alternatives for architecture documentation
Lucidchart is the default for general diagramming. If you are leaving it for architecture work, the questions are whether the diagram can be the document, how it is shared without exporting, and what keeps it true.

What to look for when leaving Lucidchart
Whether the diagram is the document
A general editor produces a picture you then paste into a wiki. Look for a tool where the detail is behind the shapes and the picture never leaves.
Sharing without exporting
A PNG rots the day it is pasted. A live URL or embed shows every reader the current version.
Technical icons and imports
Check for real vendor icon packs, and for an import path from the files you already have.
The shortlist
Blueprintr
Diagram-first documentationA blueprint is a document that opens on a diagram. Every shape carries its own detail, and the blueprint publishes to one live URL. On Team, Continuum Cloud draws AWS and Azure from a read-only role. On Enterprise, Continuum Link attaches dated snapshots from monitoring and ITSM tools, and Continuum Local sweeps your on-premise network from inside it so Blueprintr can draw it.
- The diagram is the document. A Lucidchart shape links out to a URL or another document. A Blueprintr shape opens a stratum: markdown, tables, code, files, tabs, even a second diagram. Readers navigate the documentation by clicking the diagram.
- Cloud scans without an add-on. Lucid's cloud import sits in the Cloud Accelerator, an Enterprise add-on. Continuum Cloud draws AWS and Azure read-only on the Team plan, and shows drift from Terraform state on AWS on the canvas.
- Sharing that stays live and readable. Publish a blueprint once and embed it in Confluence, SharePoint or a README. Readers open strata inside the embed, and the embed shows the current version. A Lucidchart embed disables its password protection.
- Unlimited on the free plan. Lucidchart's free plan holds three documents of 75 shapes. Blueprintr's free plan holds unlimited public and private blueprints with no shape cap.
Free forever for unlimited blueprints. Premium is $10 a month, Team is $29 a seat a month, Enterprise is quoted.

| Documentation behind every shapeCan a shape hold real content: markdown, tables, code, files? | Partly: A shape carries data fields, notes, an image and one link or action. Long-form prose behind a shape is not offered. | Yes: A stratum on any shape: markdown, tables, code, files, links, tabs, even another diagram.Free |
| Hand-drawn diagrams with vendor iconsCan you draw freely, with real AWS, Azure, GCP and Kubernetes icons? | Yes: A freeform canvas with an extensive shape catalogue, AWS, Azure and GCP shapes, and templates. | Yes: Vellum, with vendor icon packs and your own SVGs. draw.io and Excalidraw are engines too.Free |
| Diagrams from textCan a diagram be written as code and kept in version control? | Partly: Mermaid syntax imports for eight diagram types, including C4. | Partly: Mermaid tabs render from text and sit beside drawn tabs. Vellum diagrams are drawn, not coded.Free |

Moving work from Lucidchart
Export each Lucidchart document as SVG or PNG for the picture and as CSV for the shape data. The import wizard brings the images into a blueprint, and draw.io files exported from Lucidchart open as editable draw.io tabs. Redraw the architecture diagrams in Vellum with the vendor icon packs, and put the data that lived in shape fields into the strata.
Frequently asked
Why leave Lucidchart?
The common reasons are the per-user price for a tool most people only read, diagrams that end up as screenshots in a wiki, the three-document free plan, and cloud import that needs an Enterprise add-on.
Which alternative is closest to Lucidchart?
draw.io for a free general editor with Visio and Lucidchart import. Blueprintr for architecture documentation where the diagram is the page.
Can I keep my Lucidchart diagrams?
Yes. Export them as draw.io files, which draw.io and Blueprintr open, or as SVG, PNG and Visio VSDX.
Draw the first diagram. The document follows.
